Cochrane Funding Program 2026

Cochrane is an international, independent, not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote evidence-based practice in service provision and clinical healthcare. Cochrane systematic reviews are a key element in improving the quality and accessibility of the evidence to support healthcare decision making. The Australian Government has announced a total of $6,476,822 (GST exclusive) to support Cochrane activities in Australia over four years (from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2030). This funding will be administered by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The objectives of this funding program are to: - Support Australian Cochrane review production and evidence synthesis to inform healthcare decision making. - Ensure that resources are allocated to specific, measurable activities that deliver high value outputs. For further information on the Cochrane Funding Program 2026, see the Cochrane Administered Funding Grant 2026-2030_grant opportunity guidelines. The activities that fall within this grant support NHMRC’s strategic priorities: in particular the translation of research into public policy, health systems and clinical practice, and the use of new tools and technologies to improve healthcare including artificial intelligence in health. These are aligned with the Australian Government’s commitment to evidence-based healthcare and focus on priorities for national policy and decision making.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Storage Funding Program

The purpose of this grant opportunity is to support patients from two population groups who face extra costs associated with fertility preservation: people who require fertility treatment, including fertility preservation, due to a cancer diagnosis, and people at risk of passing on genetic conditions who have undergone pre-implantation genetic testing funded by the Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS), as described in MBS items 13207, 73384, 73385, 73386 or 73387.  Costs associated with the cryostorage of eggs, sperm or embryos are not currently subsidised through the Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) and these patient groups often face extra costs associated with fertility preservation. The intended outcome of the program is to reduce eligible patient’s costs for preserving eggs, sperm, or embryos through cryostorage (freezing). Under the program, patients will be eligible for up to ten years of cryostorage funding per eligible material stored. Aged Care Capital Assistance Program - Critical Infrastructure Projects

The purpose of this grant opportunity is to respond to immediate, known issues where the department has identified a critical and urgent need for aged care infrastructure funding in thin markets. It is a targeted, non?competitive grant, with organisations invited to apply by the department where they are identified as able to partner with the Commonwealth to address urgent infrastructure needs. Organisations will only be invited if they are registered providers, can demonstrate they are in a position to become registered prior to any grant being made, or are government providers that will make infrastructure available to a registered provider through a contractual arrangement to deliver funded aged care services. The objectives are to address critical and urgent infrastructure needs in thin markets where there is a risk of aged care homes closing, an immediate or imminent risk to the health, safety and wellbeing of older people or aged care workers, or time?limited opportunities to secure long?term aged care provision in areas of market failure and unmet need. This includes supporting a registered provider of last resort for new builds or upgrades, or capitalising on proposals that enable cost?sharing, collaboration, or innovative and integrated approaches. The intended outcomes are to ensure older people can access funded aged care services close to home, ensure services are delivered through safe and quality infrastructure, and support registered providers to deliver viable and sustainable aged care services over the long term. Please refer to the most recent version of the Grant Opportunity Guidelines (Version 5) published on 13 March 2026. Supporting Living Organ Donors Program

Living organ donation is major surgery and carries risk for the donor. Prospective donors undergo extensive work-up testing to ensure they are physically and mentally able to donate, and these medical appointments may require donors to take time off work. If donation surgery proceeds, donors may require a significant amount of time off work to recover. The extensive work-up testing and donation surgery may require donors to travel long distances for medical appointments. The program aims to ensure that taking time off work and out-of-pocket travel and accommodation expenses are not a barrier for individuals considering donation. The program provides reimbursement of paid leave and out-of-pocket expenses associated with donation.     The program is not an incentive to donate. It is designed to help support those individuals who wish to donate but cannot afford to due to loss of income and the financial stress it would cause for them and their family. The purpose of the program is to reduce the financial stress associated with being a living organ donor, raise the profile of living organ donors and encourage employers to support employees who have chosen to donate an organ.
